Softball - Pitching

With over 8 years of experience testing and working with D1 collegiate players, our lab has developed one of the most comprehensive motion analysis processes for softball players.

How do we measure?

We put retroreflective markers on specific anatomical landmarks. The position data for these markers are collected by our near-infrared cameras and then computed into 3D coordinates. Using principles in Classical Mechanics with the aid of modern computers, we can solve any related problems in mathematical model of the musculo-skeletal system.

What do we provide?

  • A complete report of joint kinematics and body segment rotations, power, flexibility, timing, and form during key phases of softball windmill pitch.
  • High speed video filmed during your pitches.
  • Clinical interpretations and recommendations for reducing injury or repairing current injury.

What main areas do we measure/calculate?

  • Power – ball speed, max knee lift during launch, peak propelling and breaking forces, stride length, rotational velocities etc.
  • Flexibility – max arm extension angle, pelvis and shoulder crossover
  • Timing – kinematic sequence for pelvis, trunk, shoulder and arm
  • Form during different key phases – wind-up, drive, launch/stride, foot contact, ball release, follow-through

All your data will be compared to D1 athletes with ideal forms. We translate the data values into actionable outcomes that make sense to the user and can be implemented to improve performance and limit injury.

Do you have musculoskeletal pain?

Our sports medicine-physiatrist specialists can help identify the possible reasons for the pain. The whole team works together to evaluate your spiking motion and find areas where motion can be adjusted to reduce the injury risk and pain.
